Live Earth - a 24-hour, 7-continent multi-venue concert series which took place on 7 July 2007 (7.7.07) was conceived with the notion to raise awareness about anthropogenic climate change and to encourage people to live greener lives. Amidst the recent drastic climate changes happening around the world, it is especially important that the event's objective gets communicated to billions of people across the world.
Featuring more than 150 of the world's most popular music acts, like Madonna, Shakira, Linkin Park, and with an estimated worldwide audience of 2 billion people, Live Earth hopes to inspire behavioral changes long after 7.7.07 and to trigger a global movement to solve the current climate crisis, most evidently global warming.
In addition to raising awareness of global warming, Live Earth is to be the launch event for the Live Earth Call to Action. During the 24-hour event, Live Earth will seek to deliver solutions needed to answer the call. Some of these actions include switching to energy saving bulbs, joining car pools, planting new trees, etc
As Live Earth marks the beginning of a multi-year mass persuasion campaign to move individuals, corporations and governments to take action, we can only hope that the concerted efforts will not be futile.
For a start, I will make a conscious effort to unplug my handphone charger from the socket after charging since the unit will continue to drain energy even without the handphone connected to it.
