State of Being: Happiness tinged with Sadness :(

It's official. 10 years of ICT has fly by so quickly and my NS obligation with 258SA has come to an end at last. Though I am glad that I have MRed together with the rest of the unit (FREEDOM!!!), I must admit that I am feeling a little sad at the same time... Ecstatic that there is no more IPPTs and out-field exercises anymore. But that would also mean no more bitching and reminiscing the "good old" days with my fellow comrades, whom I have bonded since my NS active days.

With the closing of this chapter in my life, I will always treasure the memories shared and the friendship made and I hereby sincerely wish the very best for all the men from 258SA!

State of Being : Blogging "live" from Swissotel Moscow Executive Lounge

After three wet and freezing days in St Petersburg, I was so looking forward at returning back to Moscow on day 7, where the sun will be shining brightly at temperature ranging between 23-26 degree celcius (i.e. the temperature when I first arrived in Moscow last Saturday).

But unfortunately, that was not the case as somehow the temperature must have changed over the past 4 days while I was away in St Petersburg. In fact, the wind was just as chilling in Moscow on day 7 as the temperature was in St Petersburg, only sans the rain. Luckily, we have already covered most of the attractions in Moscow over the previous weekend and had only left to explore the metros and the markets.

To make matter worse, not only were the weather in Moscow "unviting", we were stopped by the Moscow police for some routine check and had to pay them some "coffee money" to be let off. Thankfully on the advise of one of my colleagues, I had carried photostated copies of our passports rather than the actual ones, so that the police could not hold us random but alas they still asked that we pay them 2,000 rubles!!! just to get back those papers. I acted pitiful and surrended only 250 rubles in the end, claiming that we have already spent the rest and were leaving Russia the next day. Sigh, we have read so much about these corrupted police in the travel guide and online forum and were hoping that we would not run into them but still...

Having survived such an eventful day in Russia, I definitely hope that tomorrow will be a better day!!

p.s. I can't wait to go back to Singapore in two days time so as to bitch more about those cops and our close encounters with some pickpockets in St Petersburg (yes the nerve of those pickpockets!)

It's a pity that I am not travelling to Rome this year for holiday, else I would have loved to try to spot the many statues and location sets for Dan Brown's film adaptation of his novel "Angels & Demons".

State of Being : Peranakan Food Galore!!

It's amazing how many authenic Nyonya dishes I managed to sample and eat over my short trip in Malacca last weekend. With only 2 days, and effectively less than 36 hrs to visit the city attractions and get my hands on all the famous dishes (not just Peranankan food only) in Malacca, never had I eaten so much food in such a short period, and especially on a holiday!

Out of all the dishes eaten during that trip, I'll have to give my votes to the Chinchalok Omelette & the Durian Chendol. "Simply Sedap"!!! *slurp*

Remember Singa the Courtesy Lion whom we hold so dear during the 80s? Just when you thought that he's long forgotten and we can only relive its existence in our childhood memories, he's now back with a vengence!

Yes, it's official now. The company has just instructed us to work 4.5 days per week starting in April. In simple equation terms, this would mean

4.5 workday week
= 2 days complusory "leave" per month
= 2 days unpaid leave per month
= almost 10% cut in monthly $$$!!!

Well, I guess I still have to be thankful cos at least I still have a job...

State of Being : Finally arrived at last!!!

Whenever there's an IT Fair, I'll be there and last weekend was no exception. I went to the IT Fair with the intention to get a portable media player that could support multi format videos and most importantly a video-out for me to watch the videos on my 32" TV screen. The iPod touch which I had, does not allow video-out and the troublesome thing is that I had to convert most of my videos (downloaded over the net) into mp4 format in order for me to carry and view them on the go. Thinking perhaps that Creative's zen x-fi could satisfy all my needs in a portable media player, I checked out the product as well. But alas, it too does have a video-out function. Desperate that there wasn't any media players in the market with the specifications I wanted, I loitered aimlessly amongst the many booths at the IT Fair.

Then something caught my eyes at one of the smaller booths on level 6. Even though it was a Chinese product, but it had all the specs I wanted and more - a 4.3-inch 480 x 272 resolution display, 8GB of internal storage space, expanded microSD slot, support for RMVB, AVI and FLV video files and HD (720p) output. Due to the overwhelming response at the fair, I even had to place an order for the item. But my wait was finally over as I got my hands on my Ainol V6000HDB portable media on Friday. Hooray!!! I can finally watch my downloaded videos (with high definition option) on my 32" TV screen now!!!

In short, I simply luv this up lifting single, which has has just renewed my interest in all of Annie Lennox's hits when she was part of the duo in Eurthymics!!!

Watchmen - [3/5 stars]

State of Being : Unconventional Heroes

Directed by Zack Snyder, Watchmen is a 2009 film adaptation based on the 1986-1987 twelve-issue comic book limited series of the same name by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons. Reminiscence of his earlier 2007 film adaption of the graphic novel "300", the fighting scenes here are heavily stylized, using slow motion camera work.

While most conventional superheroes have alter ego hidden identities and perform vigilante activities on their own, the heroes here are mostly salaried government employees whose duties are to rid the cities of crime and to defend the country in times of war. Leave your perceptions of the superheroes fantasy behind before you watch this movie. Expect the unexpected from the "good" guys here as several of the heroes in Watchmen are extremely violent and often resort to using brute force to intimidate the criminals into submission. I was especially taken aback by this one scene whereby The Comedian hammered the skull of an enemy's head repeatedly with a large chopper, with extensive blood splashing all over the crime scene - definitely not for the faint-hearted!

State of Being : Do you know what is the definition of "Private"?

My boss once commented to me that she does not know much about my family or what I do during my free time during one of my personal development evaluation and therefore I may appear unapproachable to others at times. But I beg to differ when it comes to private life. Afterall, there is a reason why it is known as "private life" and not "public life". By definition, private refers to "involving someone's domestic and personal life rather than his or her work or business", so obviously I am less willing to share such info with just anyone.

That being said, it amazes me that there are people out there who are willing to share almost anything and everything about themselves with ANYONE! While celebrities are dying to keep their private lives out of the spotlight, we have another group of people who are all too willing to disclose the entire chapters of their personal lives - from courtship outings, anniversary celebrations, proposal butterflies, wedding preparations, house renovation, pregnancy joys, etc etc on the world wide web. Are they doing it for the attention or are they simply just so open to posting their own lives for others to scrutinize???

While I would like to stress that I am not adverse to sharing this info with family and friends, but when the info is posted on the internet via medium such as facebook or blogs where any Tom, Dick & Harry can have ready knowledge & access to my personal lives, that's where I'll draw the line!

... my new champagne gold 10 Megapixel Canon Digital IXUS 870 IS camera!

Having had enough of my Casio EX-Z700 which gives me crappy photos, especially for indoor pictures, what better time to invest in a new camera than to dive in among the crowd at the SITEX 2008. Comparing Sony Cyber-shot T700 with the Canon Digital IXUS 870 IS, it was a real no-brainer that I would choose the latter. Though I must agree that the Sony T700 is a real beauty with its sleek design, however, it fails rather miserably in terms of the specifications especially so with no wide-angle lens for photo-taking.

The Canon Digital IXUS 870 IS on the other hand, stands out with features such as a 4.0x wide-angle (28mm) optical zoom, ideal for large group shots, atmospheric interiors or architecture, a high-resolution 3.0” PureColor LCD II, and its optical Image Stabilizer technology, for blur-free shots throughout the zoom range and in low-light conditions.

IMHO, the Canon Digital IXUS 870 IS is definitely THE camera with the best specifications and is clearly unrivalled amongst all the latest digital cameras out in the market now!

SITEX 2008

State of Being : Recession??

You probably have read about the impending recession and the lower or even negative growth rate forecasted for Singapore next year. But judging by the huge crowd turnout and the long queues at the SITEX 2008, you wouldn't have guessed that Singaporeans are affected at all by the current economy.

In fact, on the contrary, the exhibition halls at Singapore Expo where SITEX 2008 was held was extremely crowded today. Many times, I had to strategically edged my way to the front of the booth counters so that I could get a closer look and feel the digital cameras that I was interested in. Even after I had found THE ONE, I never expect having to queue for around 75 min for payment and another 30-40 min to get the goods!!! *faint*

I sure hope the organisers for next year SITEX 2009 will improve in this area as it is really ridiculous that consumers have to queue for so long in order to "give money" to the sellers...

State of Being : Wow Wow Wow!!!

Kylie Minogue's very first concert at the Singapore Indoor Stadium on Tuesday was truly awesome. Belting out hits after hits like "Better The Devil You Know", "Can't Get You Out Of My Head, "Spinning Around" & "Step Back In Time" from her total ten albums recorded over the past twenty years, she was simply the Aussie Princess of Pop and had the audience dancing and singing along to her songs the entire night!

As expected from live concerts, most artists would usually choose to perform their previous hits in a totally new arrangement. I was especially impressed by her stripped down version of "I Believe In You". Originally an upbeat disco single, Kylie's acoustic rendition of the single was equally mesmerising. Noted with the only exception of "I Believe In You", all her other songs performed that night generally were mid to fast tempo. This I reckon is understandable since dance-pop is her forte afterall.

Overall, Kylie certainly did not disappoint the Singapore audience for her X2008 concert. Performing for full two hours, inclusive of encore, it was really value-for-money. Judging by the hysterical screams of the audience towards the end, when Kylie performed her signature tune "I Should Be So Lucky", I dare say that the concert definitely ended on a high note!!

Alas, my only complaint of the concert would be the pared down stage backdrop for her concert here. Apparently, according to online forums, she had more elaborate setup for her European leg of the tour and even came out on a hoola hoop in the opening act. Also, her Manga inspired costume and performance of the song "Nu-di-ty" was evidently missing in the Singapore concert! And that's a real bummer!

State of Being : It's finally coming to an end...

With only one day left before the end of Singapore Biennale 2008, I finally went down to the Central Promontory site yesterday and here's my take on the artworks there.

Most Impressive Installation:

Shigeru Ban - Containart Pavilion, 2008
Renowned for creating temporary buildings, which address the problem of the environment in relation to architecture, Shigeru's installation became the temporary exhibition hall for several large installations at the Central Promontory site. Created from stacked shipping containers & reusable paper tubes, it's quite a feat to build such a large scale shelter!

Most "Out-of-the-Body" Experience Installation:

Anthony McCall - Between You And I, 2006
Displayed in Asia for the first time, I had a temporary "out-of-the-body" experience as I stepped into the extremely dark room. With only two light projections emanating from the ceiling that carve out the space beneath with a series of light walls, and with intermittent fog emitted, it was a surreal feeling, somewhat like how you would feel being lost in space in a sci-fi movie.

Most Heart-Warming Installation:

Alfredo Jaun Aquilizan & Maria Isabel Gaudinez - Flight, 2004-2008
You would never have guessed that the 2000 pairs of slippers were collected mainly from the inmates of our prison by the Yellow Ribbon Project and incorporated as part of this installation. Alongside with some slippers that came from the Singaporean public, Flight attempts to signify community reintegration, compassion and collective goals.

Compared to the number of exhibits at City Hall, there are fewer artworks at South Beach Development site. I basically only took half the time to see all the exhibits here relative to the time spent at City Hall. Below are some of the more exciting installations spotted at the former SAF Warrant Officers Mess...

Tse Su-Mei - Swing, 2007
Another interesting piece by Tse Su-Mei, the entire swing, from the support hanging from the ceiling to the seat, is actually built from neon tubes. As it sways sliently in the room, you just can't help but to stop in your track to admire this precariously fragile sculpture.

Felice Varini - Drill Hall, 2008

Depending on where you are standing in the drill hall, you'll find yourself making the transition from a 2-dimensional painting to a 3-dimensional one as you move from one point to another. But you will first need to find the specific designated point of view in the hall in order to view the flat 2-dimensional sunray painting!

Leandro Erlich - Hair Salon, 2008
At first glance, you would think it's just a normal beauty parlour. However, on exploring further, you'll be amazed that the artist has actually painstakingly repricate a symmetrical beauty parlour behind the mirror such that you will be led into believing that you are seeing the reflection of the room when you look into the mirror. A definite work of art in blurring the fine line between reality & illusion!

In what appears to be a portrayal of a sunrise in a traditional Chinese-style painting, I was especially memerised by the accompanying song, a stirring Japanese female voice, to this single video channel.

I was taken aback by this terrestrial installation at City Hall and not in a good way. Feel that it is kind of amateurish to be displayed together with the other installations. Coming from one of the youngest artist featured in the Biennale, guess it definitely shows in his work.

State of Being : If I Were A Girl?

If I Were A Boy - Beyoncé
Album: I Am... Sasha Fierce; Genre: R&B

Call it intuition, but you'll probably know a song is gonna to be a future worldwide hit if you are already hooked by it after listening to it only once. And that's exactly how I felt when I first listened to Beyoncé's latest single "If I Were A Boy", released alongside "Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)" as the leading single from her third studio album "I Am... Sasha Fierce".

Lyrically, this stunning ballad was written by an up and coming singer BC Jean, and there are two versions of the song. Compared to the original version, Beyoncé's rendition is more emotive and mournful, while BC Jean's version reeks more of anguish and pain. Of the two versions, I have to admit I prefer Beyoncé's more.

Clearly this is Beyoncé's most affecting offering since her last single "Listen" from the film adaptation of the Broadway muscial Dreamgirls. And in my opinion, she has managed to turn in yet another stellar vocal performance and this song will defnitely be another potential "Irreplaceable-like" smash!

Alright, this single was long already in my ipod and the only reason I'm reviewing it now is the fact that it has been featured prominently recently as the promotional trailer ("Brighter, Bolder, Bettyer") for Ugly Betty Season 2 on Channel 5. Somehow, that trailer has managed to refuel my interest for the song!

Released as the first single from Jason Mraz's third studio album "We Sing. We Dance. We Steal Things.", the song is his most successful single worldwide to date, reaching number one in Sweden and Norway, peaking at #6 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart (before sliding to #13 in the following week), and the top ten in Austria, Australia, Germany, Switzerland, and Italy. Prior to this album, his previous offering "Mr. A-Z" gathered only moderate commercial success even though it did churn out the 2006 hit single "Geek In The Pink".

With its acoustic arrangement and "bouncy" tune especially the chorus, it is not difficult to find yourself humming along to it just after one listening. Yes! The Singapore Grand Prix, Formula One racing’s first-ever night race, is finally here this weekend! The all-new 5.067-kilometre Singapore street circuit, venue for this weekend’s night race, looks like being one of the slowest, but most exciting, of the season, with teams likely to run with high downforce and projected lap times in the 1m 45s region. Amidst the F1 publicity everywhere, I can never fathom what is so exciting about the event and why would someone pay as much as S$1,500 per night! to stay at a hotel just so that he can view the F1 race from the room. That is, until I personally witness the racing cars, with their roaring engines doing their practice session this afternoon from our old office!!!

I must admit I did feel an adrenaline rush at that very moment when I saw the racing cars wheezing down the circuit and round the bend at amazing lightning speed. Even from where we were, at level 5 of Swissotel The Stamford hotel, it was still extremely LOUD!!!

Be sure to stay tuned for the live telecast of the Qualifying round tmr and the Finals on Sunday on Channel 5. Better still, go down to City Hall and experience the excitement up close and personal! Afterall, it has been 40 over years now since the last F1 race took place in Singapore in the 1960s!

3-0... in Toronto

State of Being : Turning "3-0" overseas

What a way to mark my crossing over to the "3-0" as I spent my special day amongst new colleagues over dinner at the revolving 360 Restaurant at the CN Tower in Toronto. At a height of 553.33m, the CN Tower is the world's tallest free-standing structure and has the world's hightest public observatory. The floor in the 360 Restaurant rotates once every 72 minutes allowing a complete and unobstructed view of the city below. With magnificant view, delectable food and good company, I couldn't ask for a more memorable way to spend the day!

At 342m, here's me crouching very carefully on top of the Glass Floor!!

Travel Woes: Flight Cancelled

State of Being : Guess it just wasn't meant to be...

I should have been on my way to Toronto now if not for Typhoon Nuri...

Was supposed to leave for Toronto via Hong Kong on Cathay Pacific this morning but due to the cancellation of all inbound & outbound flights on Friday, the airline was not able to confirm my seat for an outbound flight from Hong Kong. Apparently, many travellers were still stranded in Hong Kong airport after Friday's Typhoon Nuri. (click here to read more on channelnewsasia)

And as a goodwill to all Business Class travellers, I was offered a room at Mandarin Oriental, Singapore hotel instead, while they try to sort out the flight schedules. With all meals - breakfast, lunch, dinner and even supper thrown in for free at the hotel, I must admit that it was a commendable service recovery on their part.

Initially, I was still optimistic in getting a flight out today but as the day progresses, it became clear that it was unlikely for me to even get onto tomorrow's flight.

*panic*

In the end, I had no choice but to look for an alternative flight to Toronto, the earliest of which only leaves on Sun morning, arriving at Toronto at 1050pm!!

*sigh*

Guess it just wasn't meant for me to visit the Niagara Falls during this trip then... Hopefully, there will still be future opportunities to fly to Toronto for other meetings!

First there was "The Forbidden Kingdom", then came "Kung Fu Panda" and now there's "The Mummy 3". I guess with China hosting the 2008 Olympics and getting all the media coverage leading to the international multi-sporting event, there is no better storyline to sell a movie this year than to ride on the Olympics hype and by directing motion pictures with themes revolving around anything that is related to Chinese.

For this third installment - "The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor", we see Brendan Fraser reprising his role as the charismatic Rick O'Connell. Joined by his now grown up son (Luke Ford as Alex) and along with a "new" wife (Maria Bello as Evelyn), we follow the O'Connells to the beautiful Himalayas where they tried to stop Jet Li (as the Dragon Emperor/Emperor Han) from resurrecting his Terracotta Army and enslaving the world.

Like recent films such as "300", this movie conveniently uses history as a prop in a bid to disguise a ludicrous storyline. While the film does not disappoint in the exotic locations, epic cinematography and the usual stunning visual effects that we have come to expect from "The Mummy" franchise, you somehow feel that you have seen it all before in other adventure-epic films like Indiana Jones, only this time with elements of martial arts films included.

Casting wise, it's a pity that Rachel Weisz opted out from the sequel as Mario Bello does not look sophisticated enough for the role of Evelyn. In fact, I even felt that she looks a little haggard for the part.

Overall, be wowed only by the highly anticipated final fight scene between Jet Li and Michelle Yeoh, which as reported is the first on-screen duel between the two veterans. Other than that, there's nothing sensational about this sequel...

Yes, I did it again!

It's been 15 months and 5 days since I bought my last mobile N95...

I renewed my line and traded in my N95 over the weekend in exchange for the current top-of-the line multimedia enhanced smartphone Samsung Omnia! Being a firm believer and a loyal customer of Nokia, I was a little apprehensive on getting a Samsung phone as I've never used other brands of mobile before since my uni days (Revisit: Lucky N* 8).

But lured by the aesthetically beauty (ultra-slim 12.5-mm profile and a platinum-look finish) and the high performance features of the Omnia, I couldn't find any excuses NOT to purchase this phone. Moreover, Omnia has been dubbed as the iPhone killer with better features such as a 5-megapixel CMOS camera, a 16GB built-in phone memory with an expandable external memory card slot, and it even supports various media format like DivX & WMV!

In fact, the real deal-breaker for me in not waiting to get an iPhone is that the iPhone can't even be used to record videos or send MMSes!!! These features are so basic and yet they are lacking in the iPhone, simply a turn-off for moi...

State of Being : The Tings Rocks!

That's Not My Name - The Ting Tings
Album: We Started Nothing; Genre: Indie

Call it shrewd marketing strategy, but with a band name like "The Ting Tings", who wouldn't be intrigued to find out more about the group. An English indie-pop band formed in 2006, they finally hit the jackpot when the executives at Apple chose one of their single "Shut Up And Let Me Go" for their iPod advertisement in Apr 2008. Released shortly to the US, this song became The Ting Tings' first single to chart inside the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart.

Even though "Shut Up And Let Me Go" is a hit in the US, I personally favoured another one of their single also taken from their debut album "We Started Nothing". Equally infectious and brimming with fizzy goodness, "That's Not My Name" is already a Number 1 hit in the UK Singles Chart.

Described as "no-flab electro-pop nugget" by the music critics, the song is built around a hypnotic drum beat, plenty of hand-clappings and a chanted chorus that is so reminiscence of the 1982 hit "Hey Mickey" by Toni Basil, instant and familar even after 26 years.

Visited one of our hotels in Kunshan when I was over in Shanghai last week for the regional meeting and had the opportunity to travel to Zhouzhuang 周庄, a town in Jiangsu province, China.

Located within Kunshan county-level city, 30 km southeast of Suzhou, Zhouzhuang is a popular tourist destination. Noted for its elegant watery views, it is one of the most famous water townships in China. In fact, it is also known as the "Venice of the East". Coincidentally, I was in Venice, Italy just 3 weeks ago during my Europe trip.

Was supposed to leave for Shanghai yesterday morning but due to some delays in my Visa, I had to change my flight to Monday instead!

Thanx to the Olympics, the Chinese government has made it mandatory for all Singaporeans to apply for Visa during this period. FYI, the Chinese Embassy has also changed their Visa collection time from 3-4pm to 9-12pm and I only got to know about this when I went down to collect the Visa on Friday. In fact, they didn't even indicate the change anywhere, except for the paper covering the timing at the front entrance. *grrr*

State of Being : Unpacking

Yes! I'm finally back from the 'gruelling' trip. I must say it's nice to be back home and not having to worry about missing the next flight or train or even ship. Travelling is really hard work especially if you have to run around the airport/station/port with a large backpack, search for your hotel and once checked-in, to try to visit all the planned attractions within 1-2 days at each cities. *yikes*

After 21 days, 5 countries and 15 cities, I've gone through the most extreme temperature changes within 1 holiday trip. From the freezing glacier caves at Mount Titlis in Obwalden, Switzerland to the volcanic craters hike at Santorini in Greece, it was truly a memorable holiday. Will definitely need some time to sort through and organise the photos and videos taken during the trip.

I reckon the only true downside of returning home is to face the tonnes of emails that are waiting for me when I return to the office tomorrow... Worst of all, I still have to do up my presentation for the regional meeting in Shanghai next week! *argh*

I'm now at the new Terminal 3 waiting for departure to London. Gosh, it's gonna be a long flight to Manchester for the connecting flight. Kinda stressful as it's gonna be my first time backpacking Europe with a huge haversack! I'm looking forward to Greece though with the beautiful white-washed buildings amid the blue ocean. Definitely gonna be a real postcard moment!!!

Movie Screening

Never thought that I would be watching a movie in an open space on a Saturday night.

The Punggol RC committee had orgainsed a movie screening of '881' at one of the roof garden yesterday. Had accompanied my parents to the venue as I had never been to the roof garden here and was curious to check out the place. Even though I had watched the movie before on my flight to Zurich last year, I ended up watching the entire movie again together with my parents. With complimentary prawn crackers tidbits and bottles of Newater given out to the audience, it was truly a new experience for me...

p.s. the residents at the screening even get to meet up-close & personal with one of our GRC MPs (not that I was even remotely interested!)

State of Being : I "hate" the PC Show 2008!

*sigh*

The PC show 2008 is here again at Suntec City Convention Centre. Like a kid in a candy store, I am always mesmerised by the latest gadgets at the fair and will always make an effort to check out the show, regardless whether I have something to buy in mind. This time, I had only wanted to check out some Canon cameras as I realised from my last trip in Japan that the photos taken by my friend's Canon camera was actually more vibrant than my Casio camera. But I ended up being attracted by something else and $799 poorer.

Out of curiosity I had gone to check out the Canon SD Camcorder that was launched recently and was instantly lured by the beauty of the FS100 series. Weighing at just 260g, the flash memory camcorder is the lightest and stylish in the market. Throw in some extra feebies, like 3 pieces of 4GB SD Cards and a portable 120GB external HDD, I am totally hooked by the deal!

Even though I tried to dissuade myself from getting the camcorder, somehow there is no better timing to get it than now since I am going for my Europe trip tomorrow. What better excuses to get the camcorder so that I could capture the beauty of the trip, especially in Greece! That's how I ended up 'losing' talking myself out of the purchase and came home with my newest baby. *aiyo*

You probably know that a single is gonna be a smash hit simply by looking at its song title. But ain't "I Kissed A Girl" a pretty common song title? Yes, there's nothing extraordinary with this title, if it's sung by Ne-Yo or Usher but in this case, this song is actually sung by a girl!!

Taken from American singer-songwriter Katy Perry's album "One Of The Boys", this second single has gained a significant amount of controversy since it became public as the lyrics tell of Katy's experience of kissing another girl.

"I kissed a girl, and I liked it. The taste of her cherry chapstick. I kissed a girl, Just to try it.
I hope my boyfriend don't mind it."

To-date, "I Kiss A Girl" has peaked at #5 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart, proving once again that controversy do sell afterall. Remember the Russian singing duo t.A.T.u who first appeared on the music scene as a lesbian couple? Their debut English album gave us the monstrous hit single "All The Things She Said". But as soon as the fans found out that they were just faking it as part of the group's image, their follow-up album failed to chart.

But given where credit should be due, this single does have a catchy chorus. And coupled with the burlesque-type setting of the music video and its risque lyrics, it is no wonder that the single has gained significant popularity since its release.

Thank god it's over.

Last Saturday's house warming party had our house swarmming with people!

My brother's friends were invited over for a buffet lunch while the evening buffet was reserved solely for relatives. All in all, there were over 60+ visitors - adults & children that day. My sis-in-law and my parents temp as tour guides as they led the visitors a tour of #10-314 and a few of the lil ones *horror* were even running about, playing hide & seek. Felt so "trapped" with so many curious stares as groups of people stream into my room continously. Every corners I turned was met with people and more people.

Luckily I had a wedding dinner that night and managed to escape from the evening crowd. And by the time I returned, everything was spick and span once more!!!

State of Being : Feeling Under the Weather :(

It's confirmed that the doctors at the Raffles Medical Clinic (Raffles City branch) are a hopeless bunch of doctors! What started off as a simple sore throat eventually led to a persistent cough, headache and body ache thanks to their medication!!!

I was diagnosed as having a throat inflammation and was given some pills last Mon. But barely after two days on consumming the pills, not only did my throat got worse, I started to have a terrible cough as well! Second visit to the doctors on Wed only got me more of the anti-inflammatory pills, some antibotics, flu medication & a bottle of cough syrup.

Eventually went to visit another clinic at Compass Point yesterday when my cough syrup ran out and yet my cough persisted. Hopefully the new med and the 1 day MC will do wonders for my health cos I really need to recover before my 3 weeks hol in Europe... *sigh*

Thanks to my boss who was in town recently, we were treated to a sumptuous modern French cuisine lunch at Gunther's by one of our vendors yesterday.

Located along Purvis Street, my colleagues and I have probably walked past this french restaurant many times, without the slightest idea that it has actually won many accolades:-

Seated in a private dining area with minimalist deco, our taste buds were titillated by the finest creation made by this 34 year-old Belgium chef. Despite the fact that we only had 5 courses each, including dessert, we could tell that the chef has put alot of effort into the food as the presentation is simply exquisite.

Even though I cannot recall any of the fanciful names of the dishes that were served that day, my personal favourite would have to be the starter dish (pictured above). Served cold somewhat like Japanese cold noodle, the light seasoning coupled with the caviar simply makes this dish a heavenly delight! Be sure to check out the place if you are into modern French dining.

p.s. we even had the honour of meeting the young Belgium chef in person!

State of Being : It's Time 2 Get Carrie-d Away...

Attended the premier gala of Sex And The City, the most anticipation film adaptation of the HBO series, yesterday at Vivo City. It's been 4 years since the series ended but the women of the hit series are still not much wiser when it comes to love, despite being older.

Diehard fans would probably remember that the series ended with a bang 4 years back with sex columnist Carrie's happy ending with Mr Big; career-minded lawyer Miranda's move to the surburbs with bartender Steve; purist taitai Charlotte's adoption of a Chinese girl with hubby baldy Harry; and the sex-crazed publicist Samantha's relationship with a sexy model 20s-something Smith.

To account for the time lapse since the series ended, the movie opens 4 years later. True to the essence of the series, the movie is merely a continuation of the drama faced by the four female stereotypes in their quest for love, love and more love! Expect more drama, like runaway bridegroom, cheating husband, pregnancy anxiety and monogomy woes, in this festive celebration of sisterhood.

At 2 hr 40 min long, the pace of the movie is just right. In fact, there was never a dull moment in the movie. However, before you go dashing out to the cinema to get the ticket, it's probably best that you watch the series (6 seasons in all) first in order to 'appreciate' the crazy lives of these women. Thankfully, I had been introduced to the series by my ex (she's a Carrie Bradshaw fan!) when the series premiered, so that's no need for me to "do my homework" now.

Mercy - Duffy

At first listen, you may think that "Mercy" is the latest single by Amy Winehouse - the British sensation that swept 4 awards at the 2008 Grammy Awards. Truth is "Mercy" is in fact the second single taken off from the new Welsh singer-songwriter Duffy's debut studio album "Rockyferry". According to Duffy the song is autobiographical and is about "sexual liberty" and "not doing something somebody else wants you to do".

First released on March 3, 2008 by A&M Records, the song entered the UK Singles Chart at #1 solely on download sales. To-date. the single has performed fairly well in the US, jumping to #27 on its fourth week on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart.

On repeated listening, this single is simply awesome!! Not only is the song catchy and has a great beat, Duffy's voice sounds so bluesy and old-time, somewhat with a 50 or 60s feel to it. The retro-soul style is given further significance by the appearance of several Northern Soul dancers in the song's music video. Be sure to check out the video.

So while Amy Winehouse is wasting her life away in rehabilitation, watch out for the newest British music import by Duffy, who will probably be nominated for next year's Grammy Awards!!!

Have always contemplated getting a dress watch (i.e. with leather strap) to complement more formal occasions like the annual marketing conferences & meetings.

After much research and deliberation, finally settled for a "Automatic" Swiss made ZENO watch that is available only at the authorised retailers Emotus Time Culture in Singapore. Measuring 47.5mm in diameter for the face and having a screw-in exposition back (skeleton), the time piece is a worthy investment despite its pricey tag $$$

Guess I'll just have to control my spending now... even more so with the coming 21 days Europe trip next month! *Yikes*

Just finished fixing two toy robots meant as presents for my nephew's birthday. Almost felt like a small boy again while fixing the pieces together.

Thought the robots come prefixed inside the boxes but turned out that they are airfix kits instead. Since the father of the child i.e. my elder bro has no patience with fixing airfix models and my nephew is too lazy to fix them himself, this uncle had to take over the 'dirty' job in the end.

But honestly speaking, I've always like putting things together. Needless to say, I used to enjoy playing with Lego building blocks when I was young. Pity that the children are so pre-occupied with computer games these days. Sad to say, both my nephews are no exception... *sigh*

Did you know that "Labour Day", also known as "May Day" or "International Workers' Day", is an annual holiday celebrated all over the world that resulted from the social and economic achievements of the international labour movement? While most countries declare 1st May as the official Labour Day, there are some countries, like US & NZ that actually celebrate the holiday in Sep & Oct instead.

Unlike some countries that celebrate the holiday with demonstrations of the trade unions or processions carried out by various labour organizations, May Day is celebrated with little fanfare for the general public in Singapore. For myself, it is simply a good time to catch up on my beauty sleep!

After a four year absence since the release of "Body Language" & a public struggle with breast cancer, Aussie pop icon Kylie Minogue is finally back with her tenth studio "X". Even though the new album has received critical acclaim for fusing glam electronica and dance, I just wasn't wowed by her new musical direction. In fact, her first 2 singles "2 Hearts" and "Wow" didn't leave much of an impression with me, and I was expecting Kylie's follow-up single "In My Arms" to be just as forgettable.

However, after catching the music video of her latest single on MTV channel, I was instantly hooked by its "fuzzed-out" and "synth heavy" arrangement. Think radio-friendly track sounding like early Madonna. Based on the infectious chorus, Kylie's latest offering is definitely single-worthy and a sure dance hit in the club!!!

While "In My Arms" is already her 3rd single in the UK/Europe, for her album release in US, Kylie will be releasing a remix version of "In My Arms" as the lead single instead. Featuring Mims for the single, the original song has been remixed to cater to the US market. Hopefully, Kylie is able to regain back some chart credibility in the US with "All I See". Afterall, her last Billboard Top 10 hit was "Can't Get You Of Out Of My Head" in 2001.

that the Punggol LRT only operates in ONE direction before & after 3pm each day and because of that, I had to go an entire round of 12 min 'sight-seeing' on Sun when I left for my daily workout from Cove LRT station after 3pm, where it should have been only 1-stop (2 min) away from Punggol MRT station!
that ALL the escalators in the Punggol MRT station are shut down on a Sun afternoon; only the stairs & lifts are available!
that Punggol MRT station is so DESERTED on a Sun afternoon at around 4pm that you can have the entire train carriage to yourself! Unbelievable!!!

State of Being : Inspirational!

In conjunction with "Idol Gives Back", the top 8 finalists on American Idols had to perform songs that are inspirational on Wed show. While most of them performed well, I was only captivated by Jason Castro's rendition of "Over The Rainbow". Well, the ukulele arrangement for the song was simply very refreshing, unlike the familiar Judy Garland's rendition that we are all so used to listening.

In fact, that rendition was actually taken from Israel "Iz" Kamakawiwo`ole's "Facing Future" album released in 1993. Dubbed the "The Gentle Giant" by his fans, he only became famous outside Hawaii after his medley of "Over the Rainbow" and "What a Wonderful World", which was subsequently featured in several films (like 50 First Dates & Meet Joe Black), television programs, and commercials.

Had I not seen the album cover, I probably would not have realised that such a beautiful voice could actually come from a big guy like him. It's a pity though that Iz has already passed away at the tender age of 38 due to weight-related respiratory illness. But one thing is for sure, he will remain as one of the major influences in Hawaiian music and his rendition of "Over The Rainbow" would definitely continue to inspire future generations...

Slow Me Down - Emmy Rossum

Was watching the AC Countdown Chart on cable's MTV channel the other day and that's when I got acquainted with Emmy Rossum. A Golden Globe-nominated actress for her role in the screen adaptation of The Phantom of the Opera, I wasn't even aware that she's actually a singer-songwriter and has released an album with Geffen Records.

Apparently, after her role in The Phantom of the Opera, Rossum was offered several deals to record classical albums, but refused, opting to create an album of contemporary, more mainstream music. Though her voice is not as vocally powerful as Sara Brightman in the rendition of "The Phantom of the Opera", she fares way ahead in the looks department with her classical beauty.

Normally, singles like "Slow Me Down" isn't my kind of music but it's just so soothing listening to her angelic voice. In fact, this song sounded totally different than the other pop 'mainstream' music that we usually hear on the radio. I guess that this is what they mean when you fully utilize your vocals without over-stretching your range like what those current American Idols singers are doing on a weekly basis!!

My heart was feeling kinda heavy when I took this video last night. It's the usual route that I have been taking for the past 20 years to get back home. Only started filming from the traffic light junction onwards, since I would have definitely attracted funny stares if I had started filming as soon as I stepped out from the MRT station. From primary school, to secondary school, to junior college, to national service, to university, and to work, this has always been the familiar route welcoming me back home.

Over the years, I have witnessed the transformation of this place from a relatively 'ghost' town to the present buzzling town central. Pity that I won't be able to see the circle line open before I move. I'm already missing this place already... *sob sob*

New Soul - Yael Naim

Taken off from Yael Naim's eponymous album, "New Soul" is her second single to-date after her last single interpretation of Britney's 2004 hit "Toxic". Of French-Israeli nationality, the song only gained popularity in the United States following its use in the advertisemnt for MacBook Air laptop (MacBook Air ad)

Soon after the commercial was aired, "New Soul" debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 at #9, owing to high digital download sales. Incidentally, this song became Naim's first U.S. top ten single, making her the first Israeli solo artist to ever have a top ten hit in America. Alas, the song also have the dubious honour of sustaining one of the largest falls from the top 10 in Billboard history. It peaked at #7 on the chart before falling to #42 the following week.

In all fair assessment, "New Soul" does inject a breath of fresh air to the Billboard Top 100 chart, which I feel has long been dominated by Hip-Hop & R&B melodies. Featuring a trombone in the chorus and a prominent "lalalala" section as its hook, the song is rather simple in its musical arrangement but yet interesting enough to arrest your attention.

Come to think of it, I probably would not have gotten to know Yael Naim if it was not for Apple. As always, Apple has a flair for their choice of music for their commericals, think Daft Punk's "Technologic", Caesars Palace's "Jerk It Out", Feist's "1234" and now Yael Naim's "New Soul". Bravo Apple for the unique taste in music!!!

No Country For Old Men

State of Being : Dark & Disturbing

Huh? No Country For Old Men? What show is that? I must admit that when my friends asked me to watch this show, I was not exactly thrilled. All I knew prior to the movie was that Tommy Lee Jones is starring in the movie and that the movie is rated NC16 (violence) and had won some acclaimed awards.

But now that I have watched the film, I must say it's pretty good. Faithfully adapted from the well-received Cormac McCarthy novel of the same name, No Country for Old Men tells the story of an illicit drug deal gone wrong in a remote desert location and the ensuing cat-and-mouse drama that follows.

Though the film started off a lil confusing, the storyline gradually unfolds more as the antagonist Anton Chigurh (Javier Bardem), a professional hitman, hired to retrieve the satchel of money hunts down Llewelyn Moss (Josh Brolin) who has made off with the money. It is a lil disturbing though watching Chigurh killing all those in his way, many of whom are actually innocent parties he encounters by chance or drivers of cars he steals for transport.

And by mid-way though the movie, I was thinking who is the lead actor in this movie cos I had no impression at all of Tommy Lee Jone's sheriff character. In fact, I feel that Javier's protrayal as the violent sociopath tends to leave a greater impression on my (and I'm sure other movie goers') mind(s) and the sheriff role has somewhat been relegated to a supporting character instead!

In the end, just when one is more immersed in the storyline and more interested in finding out who will be the final person with the loot, the movie ended abruptly! As the lights came on and the movie goers made their way to the exit, I followed suit and left the cinema pondering over the ending...

State of Being : Tiring but Fulfilling

While most people will usually relax on a Sat afternoon but for me and my family, we actually spent yesterday afternoon hawking 2nd hand goods @ Tanglin Mall Flea Market. Though it was a tiring 6-7 hours of experience but we were still fairly satisfied with the profits at the end of the day.

Anw here's an account of my first attempt at being an entrepreneur @ Tanglin Mall Flea Market:

Created an online advertisement at sgadsonline (see ADV Tanglin Mall Flea Market)
Designed the Pricing Boards on the night before

Rather ambitious pricing!

Reached the mall at 230pm and wasted no time in setting up the stall; our LOT 23!

Here's our allocated space. Though small...

...but rather good location!

Managed to sell our goods at mostly $5 each for the first 1-2 hours

Look at our high pile of clothes at the beginning

Other 'junks' besides clothes selling for $1-$5 each

But was "forced" to lower our prices to $3/$4 as the day follows...

Eventually started clearing stocks at $2 & even $1!!! when the crowd started getting thin
Finally decided that we are done for the day at 9pm *shagged* :P

Yes, today was the last day for JM and as per 'tradition' we treated him to a farewell lunch and got him a farewell gift - a Tommy Hilfiger sweater. Since the day I joined this company, we already had so many farewells that I've lost count with the number of 'fallen comrades' and have since grown accustomed to familiar faces leaving us. One thing is for sure, the cost for the farewells shared amongst fewer people, especially in the RED office are definitely getting more costly!

랄랄라, It’s Love! (Lalala, It's Love!) - The Melody

Taken off the soundtrack of the "Coffee Prince", I never thought that I would actually be playing this song over and over again in my ipod. But I guess given the popularity of MBC 17-parter Korean drama "The 1st Shop of Coffee Prince" or simply titled as "Coffee Prince", that is currently airing 5 days a week on Channel U, it is inevitable that this bouncy opening theme "랄랄라, It’s Love!"
(Lalala, It's Love!) eventually gets stuck in my head!

Starring popular actress Yoon Eun Hye & Gong Yoo, there are in fact many memorable scenes from the show which could be relived with the songs compiled on this soundtrack. Compiled mostly of soothing and calming music, I think the soundtrack is best suited for a spin on a sunny day. In addition to The Melody's "랄랄라, It’s Love!" (Lalala, It's Love!), other recommended tracks include As One's "White Love Story", The Melody's "Polly" and the ending theme Tearliner's "고고찬!!" (Go Go Chan!!)

Just been to the new flat. The renovation works is 60% close to completion. What's with the new flat built by HDB anyway? The flats are no longer comparable in terms of size to the ones built 10-20 years ago.

Apparently, someone has given up his lot and they called me up only a week later after the ballot date to inform me that I had been alloted a lot (Lot 23 to be precise!) in the redraw. Hopefully my bros, my sis-in-laws and myself will be able to sell off some of our stuffs in return for some $$$!

In the meantime, I can only cherish my "limited" time & convenience & freedom here in my soon to be ex home... *sob sob*

Hello 2008!!!

State of Being : Full *Burp*

Met up with the usual kaki for the annual NYE Countdown. Time really flies, can't imagine that we have been keeping up with the 'tradition' for 10 years now. With the exception of 1 year, where majority of the gang are working overseas and the countdown had to be called off, the usual suspects had always turned up for the countdown without fail.

For this year, since CH has graciously invited us to his condo for a housewarming-cum-countdown party, we decided to do pot-luck to save CH & his wife the hassle.

The variety of food was abundant yesterday, ranging from pizzas, curry chicken, shephard's pie, poached prawns to meatballs, "bah kwah" pao (not "kong bah" pao meh??) & poh piah (last count ONLY 2 went ahead to roll their poh piahs though). For deserts, we stuffed ourselves silly with the extremely sinful Awfully Chocolate cake plus some Chips & Dips.

What's the commotion?

Main highlight of the day has got to be the "overly-concentrated" fondue!! Despite the host's second attempt at melting the chocolate (he has done a trial run the night before), the chocolate still somehow turned out as a "thick" chocolate paste. In the end, we had no choice but to resort to mxing some chocolate Swensens Ice Cream, since there weren't any fresh milk, to de-concentrate the paste.

Overall, minus off the "miss(es)" (i.e. the fondue), everyone had lots of fun catching up with one another and I'm pretty sure that those whom were present were sure to have gain some extra pounds from the good spread!!

Confidently delivered a 45min presentation to fellow colleagues @ the Feb WW Marketing Meeting in Ankara (Revisit: Turkish Delights! Part I (Leisure Mode) & Turkish Delights! Part II (Business Mode) )

Participated and completed 5.6km in 44min in the fourth annual JPMorgan Chase Corporate Challenge in May (Revisit: 4-5-1-2)

Emerged as the bowling champ @ the "1st Annual Swissotel Cup" held at Marine Bowl in Jun!! Haha (Revisit: Marine Bowl)

Navigated around Japan amidst the complicating railways (on our own) during a 6-days tour extension in Oct without getting lost! *heng* (Revisit: 6 things about Japan)

Last but not least, was informed that there will be some changes to my job status when I was over in Zürich in Dec. More to be revealed once everything is confirmed in Jan 08... ;)

While we continue to see familiar faces like Rihanna, Nelly Furtado, Fergie & Justin Timberlake dominating the 2007 charts, we also see new artists like Sean Kingston, Leona Lewis & Sara Bareilles making their presence felt in the US/UK singles chart.

For myself in 2007, I am most blown away by Rihanna's hypnotic monster hit single "Umbrella" and OneRepublic's haunting "Apologize". Since undeniably, I have always been captivated by sentimental pop ballads, my favourite ballads in 2007 include Fergie's "Big Girls Don't Cry", Enrique Iglesias' "Do You Know?" and X-factor winner Leona Lewis' "Bleeding Love".

Surprisingly, two reggae singles managed to make it to my top 10 list this year; Wyclef Jean's "Sweetest Girl (Dollar Bill)", being one of them. The other spot ultimately goes to another hit single for 2007 - newbie Sean Kingston's "Beautiful Girls". Other genres that managed to clinch a spot on my personal list include pop-punk band Good Charlotte's "I Don't Wanna Be In Love" and Robyn's electro-synth gem "Handle Me". The latter whom I only chanced upon in Amsterdam, where her single was constantly being aired on MTV channel.

And to round it off the list of my personal list of top 10 singles for 2007, and one of my guilty listening pleasure for 2007, is none other than Mika's "Lollipop", which is pure bubblegum pop (no pun intended) at its best!!!

One of the more successful member of the now defunct trio The Fugees, Wyclef Jean has come far with the release of six albums to-date. Featuring Akon, Lil Wayne & Niia, the latest lead single off Wyclef Jean's sixth solo album, "Carnival Vol. II: Memoirs Of An Immigrant", "Sweetest Girl (Dollar Bill)" is fast gaining airplay and climbing up the Billboard charts. As at the week of 24 December 2007, "Sweetest Girl (Dollar Bill)" has already reached #12 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Fusing reggae and R&B, the single has this mesmerising effect on listeners, especially so with the beautiful female vocals in the background. You'll be immediately hooked by the catchy chorus - "See I'mma tell you, like Wu told me, Cash rules everything, around me", which is actually a reference to the Wu Tang Clan's mid-90s hit single "C.R.E.A.M." (Cash Rules Everything Around Me).

The music video for this single is mainly set in a refugee camp, with special guest appearance by Raekwon of the Wu-Tang Clan in the remix version. The video for the remix switches between the original "C.R.E.A.M." instrumental and trumpets.

National Treasure: Book Of Secrets

State of Being : Déjà Vu

In this sequel to the 2004 film National Treasure, Nicolas Cage reprises his role as Benjamin Franklin Gates, who's still uncovering long-lost secrets and treasures. While I have never seen the first "National Treasure" movie, somehow I feel that most movie-goers have seen most of the thrills - if not all - of this done before, in the Indiana Jones movies, for this second installment -"National Treasure: Book of Secrets".

Honestly speaking, Nicolags Cage has never wow me as a leading actor material. I feel that he has neither any charisma or possess any idol looks (is that receding hairline??) to sell a movie. Anyone even remember the Marvel Comics movie adaptation "Ghost Rider"?? In fact, I probably would not have watch the movie if not for the fact that I got the preview tickets for free, compliments of a colleague CL.

Notwithstanding that Cage looks ridiculous in an unflattering hairpiece, the movie is still fun, goofy and entertaining enough to hold your interest without ever getting too exciting. In other words, "Book of Secrets" is merely a strictly by-the-book sequel: It doesn't cheat series fans but it doesn't offer many thrills or surprises or lingering puzzles, either.

Zürich + Geneva + Amsterdam Sights

State of Being : Will I ever visit these places again?

Though it was supposedly just a business trip to attend the Corporate Marketing Meeting in Zürich, I was fortunate enough to squeeze in a FAM (familiarisation) trip to two other Europe hotels - Swissôtel Métropole, Geneva & Swissôtel Amsterdam while I was there. Swissôtel Métropole, Geneva were even more so hospitable as to put me up in a Junior Suite during my weekend in Geneva. :)

I must admit both hotels were conveniently located, especially so for Swissôtel Amsterdam, where it is situated right in the heart of the city with every notable attractions within walking distances. A pity that the Royal Palace was closed for renovation but nevertheless I still managed to visit The Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, Sex Museum, Madame Tussaud's Wax Museum, Flower Market, etc during my two days short extension in Amsterdam. Definitely hope to visit Amsterdam some time again and see the windmills during Summer!

Waiting for my flight to Zürich now at Terminal 2. Gosh it's gonna be a 12-hr flight. Looking forward to the trip as well as feeling quite "sian" cos it's gonna be a working trip afterall. And worse still the weather is FREEZING cold now in Switzerland.

Only looking forward to my 2 day extension in Amsterdam. Hmmm... wonder what's there to visit though. Guess gotta check my travel guide then! Bis bald.

It's a toss between two worthy singles this month. Both singles are equally catchy and coincidentally the singers are both winners - Shayne Ward (Season 2) & Leona Lewis (Season 3) of the British television music talent show "The X Factor".

Taken off from the debut album "Spirit", you'll be immediately hooked with the lead off single "Bleeding Love", which showcases Leona's impressive vocal prowess. Emotionally fuelled, and extremely upbeat, "Bleeding Love" has already topped the UK singles chart and is the biggest selling UK single of 2007 so far. With violins, organ, and the marching band drum beat, the mid-tempo song is sure to be a hit also when "Spirit" is eventually released in the US in Jan 2008.

While Leona Lewis' debut single/album is already a hit, Shayne Ward has much more to prove with his follow-up album. Proving that he is no one-hit wonder with "No Promises" only, Shayne's fourth single, and the first song taken from his second album "Breathless", "If That's OK With You" is anything but forgettable. Featuring guest vocals from the chipmunks, somewhat like Akon's "Lonely", the song highest position on the UK Singles Chart is #2. In fact, I feel that the song is so easy on the ears that you''ll definitely be tapping your feet along to the tune in no time at all!

State of Being : Is it for real???

Much has been made of the NC-17 sex scenes for the latest erotic espionage thriller Lust, Caution (色，戒) by Ang Lee. So much so that viewers who have watched the movie actually left the cinema wondering whether the sex scenes were actually for real.

Based loosely on the short story of the same name published in 1979 by Chinese author Eileen Chang - an actual event that took place in 1939-1940, the actors definitely deserve the highest praise for their bold performance.

Displaying partial frontal pubic hair and executing porn-like pelvic thrusts, Cannes Film Festival Best Actor (2000) Tony Leung Chiu Wai (梁朝偉), goes places he's never been before as the role of the Japanese collaborator Mr Yee in Lust, Caution. Equally remarkable in her role as the undercover assassinate Wong Chia-Chi, newcomer Tang Wei (湯唯) literally bares all and gives a performance that will be talked about for years.

In fact, the scenes were so intense that it is no wonder that it has stirred up much controversies sicne its release. Honestly speaking, it was the first time I've seen so much flesh (& hair) bared in a Mandarin movie!

Indeed, Ang Lee is a true master in his field. With Brokeback Mountain, and now Lust, Caution, Ang Lee is one Chinese director who is definitely not afraid to overstep the boundary in film-making. Through his recent works, we have come to expect that his future work will most certainly be just as titillating as the two. I can only wait with abated breath for his next work...

State of Being : Observant?

1. Japanese are simply CRAZY over Mickey Mouse.

Compared to Universal Studios Osaka, there were longer queues for the rides everywhere in Tokyo Disneyland!! We even had to queue for 90min just to enter Mickey's humble home and snap a pix with the famous one. Yikes!

2. Japanese are "clean" people.

Yes, being "clean" is so important to them to the extent that they even had high tech toilets that wash their bums after doing their "business". Honestly speaking, it felt kinda funny with the warm water spraying at my posterior. Anw, I still relied on the good old toliet paper to clean up the mess everytime even after washing.

3. Japanese are extremely punctual?

Not so sure about the people though, but the schedules for the buses, subway trains & shinkansen are strictly adhered to. As a result, it was quite stressful during one of our transfer from one shinkansen (Kokura to Shin-Osaka) to another (Shin-Osaka to Tokyo) as we had only 7min to navigate and find the right platform at the station. Missing the shinkansen would mean that we had to wait for another 1hr for the next train!

4. Japanese men are big on tote bags!

Relative to Singapore, you'll highly see any men here carrying a "handbag", more commonly known as the tote bag. In fact, Singapore men usually move around more with bags sling over their chest rather than carrying a bag over one of their shoulders. Even though it would have been nice getting a tote bag there, but I opted for an exclusive Burberry Black Label briefcase (33,600円) instead. Even though we were given only a mere 15min stop at the Burberry shop in Ginza, I already knew which section I'll be heading - the Black Label section. In case you aren't aware, the exclusive Burberry Black Label is only available in Japan. 3 days later, I succumbed to temptation and bought a mobile strap (6,300円) from the Black Label counter in Shinjuku Isetan as well.

5. Japanese like to push. *Ouch*

It's a real wonder how a seemingly packed train is able to accomodate 5-6 more passengers after commuters shoved their way into a crowded train. I was initially near the train door during boarding but subsequently got pushed some distance back into the packed train before the door closes. Hmmm... perhaps we could deploy this tactic as well in Singapore during the peak hours??

6. Japanese just luv doing the dishes.

Why else would they use so many dishes to serve their meals? Believe it or not, the servings for both meals is meant for only one person. Just check out the number of dishes they used for two of our meals in Japan...

It's been 4 years since the last studio album release from Britney Spears in 2003 and based on her comeback catchy single "Gimme More" taken from her 5th album "Blackout", the ex-princess of pop looks set to re-capture the hearts of her fans worldwide & silence her harsh critics once more.

Generally well-received by music critcs, the latest uptempo dance track "Gimme More" became Spears' biggest hit since "...Baby One More Time", having already reached number three on the Billboard Hot 100 to-date. Personally, I like the remixed version of the single featuring T.I. better.

With so much controversy and public scrutiny surrounding her every move, Britney remains unapologetic and continues to shock the public with her latest raunchy video, featuring herself pole dancing in a strip bar joint, for her new single. What will she come up next for her follow up single? I can only wait with bated breath...

Our 7th Day in Japan

State of Being : Exhausted

Gosh! We are all on our own now. The rest of the tour members are already back in Singapore so as to speak. So far so good. Though we didn't manage to visit Takayama, due to time constraint, we did manage to replace with Nagoya's Castle and Sakae shopping district instead. The time now in Nagoya is 10:12pm. Extremely tired from the train ride, sight seeing and walking.

Tmr will be another tiring day as we will be going to Takaragawa Onsen via Tokyo; 2 hour shinkansen ride to Tokyo plus another 3 hour ride to the Onsen. Aiyoooooooo.

Will update the blog again if there is free internet (like this hotel where we are staying for the night). In case anyone is interested, we are staying at Nagoya Rolen Hotel.

Excited and nervous at the same time, since we'll be navigating the complicating Japan railways on our own during our 6-days extension after 7 days "Central Japan tour" with the travel agency... Hopefully, we are all set for our 6-days extension "Tokyo-Nagoya-Takayama-Beppu-Osaka" amazing race!! Hahaha

"Goodbye"

State of Being : Sad :(

It was a somber day in the office as another colleague is leaving us for greener pastures. Our regional office is already so small (total 9 of us) and now it's gonna get even smaller, with the departure of PA and later the relocation of NC...

I had initiated the "Project RED Box" (a Tiffany pouch had already been given to her at a early farewell dinner at PS Cafe), as a final parting gift for PA. Idea was to get everyone to contribute a RED gift that represents himself/herself. In the end, I 'sacrifice' one of my Spiderman toy figurine that was on my office phone (Revisit: Where's Spidey?).

I had only wanted a small box initially but eventually had to get a bigger one as JM's gift was a book! In the end, we resorted to a RED box file from Popular. I cut and pasted a RED foam circumvex on the box cover, filled it with styrofoam balls and RED feathers, and buried all our gifts together with some of our corporate RED gifts underneath it. Viola, a RED treasure box in the end!!

And since we do not have a photo whereby all of us are present (somehow someone just had to be "missing" for some reasons), I had to resort to photoshoppin' SK into one of the photos. To complete the treasure box, I burned a CD filled with beautiful Swissôtel memories for PA to remember us always.

When the time finally come for us to say our goodbyes, coupled with PA's farewell ppt slides that uses Ryan Cabrera's "I Will Remember You" song in the background, the scene was trully an emotional one as PA saw the gifts. (visit junkpads for the pictures).

I just simply hate "goodbyes". I reckon I might actually cry when it's time for me to leave this company, afterall it has been my 'family' for close to 5 years now. Tears were welling in my eyes as I bid PA farewell (for the last time in our office). The office is definitely gonna miss PA on monday, tuesday, wednesday, ...

Just when I thought that there isn't any new song worth featuring this month, then comes along this haunting new single "Apologize" by OneRepublic.

Remixed by Timbaland and featured as the third single off the latter's album "Timbaland Presents: Shock Value", the remixed version has a completely different beat than the original version. Timbaland is heard in the background, somewhat sampling vocals similar to Nelly Furtado's "Say It Right". To-date, the track has already charted on Billboard Hot 100 and based on the heavy airplay, it looks set to break into the top 10!

Virtually only a number one band on the online community before their collaboration with Timbaland, OneRepublic is scheduled to release their self-titled debut album in late 2007. Off their debut album, "Apologize" will be released as a single in its original version, which is more soft-rock/pop but equally as awesome as Timbaland's r&b/hip-hop remix of the same song.

Been so bz lately with my Jap trip preparation and some family issues that I haven't been blogging for quite some time.

Anw this entry is way overdue as the actual event already took place around 2 weeks ago on 11 Sep. As usual, the Corporate Office were invited as VIPs to SMC's Annual Dinner & Dance themed "Dazzling Nite".

And DAZZLING it definitely was. With performances put up by the various dept of the hotel, it was a joy watching the staffs' lively performances. From the grease inspired musical, to the dreamgirls act (didn't we see this at RC hotels Dinner & Dance also?), to the techno sexy babes dance rountine, and finally to the SMC fashion show, it was actually really FUN to watch!!!

State of Being : 1 more candle on the cake

Thanks to all who celebrated my birthday, in one way or another, last week. From the Tues 点心 lunch at Nobel House Restaurant to the lunch party in the office and finally to the celebration dinner on the day itself, I was thankful to all who remembered.

Indeed, I have spent 5 birthdays with my present company to-date and the gifts I received over the years from colleagues include a box of CK Boxers Briefs (2003), a Plush Giraffe Toy & a Memo Holder (2005), a I.AM Tie (2006) and a Sennheiser Earphones (2007).

Coincidentally, I had the same set of Sennheiser Earphones. In the end, my colleagues made me exchange the earphones for other stuffs at Challenger, which was the most stressful shopping spree ever as I had no intention of gettng any electronic gadgets and yet had to look for items totalling to S$129!!! Items which I finally got in return for the exchange include a Notebook Cooler Pad, a iPod Shuffle Case, a 1GB Sony Thumbdrive, 2 boxes of DVD-RW, a USB Cable, a Panasonic Earphones and a Cable Organiser - 8 items in all!!!

Nevertheless, thank you for all the gifts. And thank you for all the sms-es and emails. I truly appreciate it...

Welcome to Viva Las Vegas, Singapore's very first legalised casino located in the heart of the city, in Raffles City Convention Centre. Opened to the public for one night only, I was indeed honoured to be invited to the premise for a game....

In fact, Raffles Ballroom was magically converted into a Las Vegas casino on 22 Aug and with bunny-girls out in full force, the annual dinner & dance for the RC hotels was certainly a night to remember!

From the exquisite invitation cards to blinding lights and roulette games, it was definitely befitting of the Las Vegas theme. Even the performances were so Vegas-like! Indeed, it was really entertaining watching familiar faces dressed up in dazzling showgirls outfits with matching feather headgear for the Dinner & Dance opening act; and most amazingly a few even crossdressed to transform themselves into the RC dreamgirls!!

My only lament is that only 4 from the Red Team managed to turn up for the event, the others were either overseas or had other corporate functions to attend. Donuts Overload Burp

State of Being : NO more Donuts (for the time being...)

Received YET another box of donuts on Friday and this time it's from Krispy Kreme, specially flown in by a friend. *Thank You* Six days earlier on a Sunday night, had received a dozen J.CO donuts, which is a popular chain of doughnut stores in Indonesia. 18 donuts in all in less than a week!!!

Having ate so many donuts within a week, think I will abstain from eating more donuts for the time being. In fact, just last month alone, I had queued for the Donut Factory (18 donuts also), and then for the BKK trip earlier this month, I had bought myself two Dunkin' Donuts ! As a matter of fact, some of the donut varieties amongst the different brands tend to taste fairly similar, .... or maybe it's due to the fact that I was "numb" from eating them already. *Haha*

Well, if your answer is "biscuits", you're only partially right. In fact, biscuit-maker Jacob has created the seven largest biscuit sculptures currently on display at Junction 8 Shopping Centre till August 19.

Featuring iconic architectural structures like the Esplanade in Singapore (close-up picture above), the Eiffel Tower, the Great Pyramid of Giza, the Tower Bridge of London, the Great Wall of China, the Taj Mahal, and Malaysia's Petronas Twin Towers (measuring over two meters high!), these masterpieces required more than 24,000 biscuits of varying colors, shapes and sizes.
